Submission: "Governance of Auckland" by John Alexander

Date:04/21/2008
Submitted By:John Alexander
Organisation:None specified
Subject:Governance of Auckland
Attending Hearing:No

General Comments

In my opinion the only way that Auckland can move ahead is to eliminate the current multiple city structure so that plans and strategies can be made and implemented without the continuing delays and comprimises being put in place by local self interest groups.

Part 1 - Short Form

Are you happy with the form of local government in Auckland?
No

If not, what changes would you like to see?
One governing body. Just look at the current situation with water, electricity, sewerage and transport. ( The Northern Busway is a farce in my opinion with no direct conection to the Albany transfer station )

Part 2 - Long Form

Overview: Issue 1 - What kind of local government arrangements will help Auckland become a successful world-class city?
One truly focused group with the well being of the region at heart

Regional decision making: Issue 2 - What decisions should be made and implemented at a regional level? By what body or bodies or processes should these decisions be made?
One body to manage all infrastructure

Local decision making: Issue 3 - What decisions should be made and implemented at a local level? By what body or bodies or processes should these decisions be made?
Local interests, parks, shopping centers etc

Coordination: Issue 4 - To what extent should individual local councils follow consistent practices? How do we ensure that decisions made at national, regional, and local government levels are consistent with each other, and that they lead in the same direction?
WITH ONE CONTROLLING BODY

Accountability: Issue 5 - How do we ensure that whatever form of local government is adopted remains properly accountable to the people of Auckland?
One body setting goals and performance and with the authority to terminate those who do not perform

Summary

Do you have any other comments on Auckland’s decision-making structures?
Current system is hopless and ineficient

Please write a brief summary of the key points in your submission:
